The Shark is Upside Down
Sculpture Installation
This sculptural installation features several sharks floating upside down in the air,
suspended by lightweight galvanized metal structures that allow light to pass through and cast shadows across the space.
The work references tonic immobility, a biological state in which sharks become temporarily inactive when manipulated,
a phenomenon that, in a human context, can be interpreted as a metaphor for both mental and social paralysis.
Tonic immobility symbolizes a condition of protection, but also of vulnerability,
reflecting the reality of a contemporary world where individuals, under stress and external pressures,
may fall into a state of disconnection or passivity. This apparent calm becomes a fertile ground for
manipulation and control.
The work invites the viewer to reflect on how, in today’s society, emotional and
social disengagement can serve both as a survival strategy and a form of exposure to the dynamics of power
and exploitation.
Through this visual metaphor, the installation prompts a reflection on the fragility of autonomy
within the pressures of social and political forces, encouraging a questioning of the balance between
personal protection and vulnerability to the external forces that shape us..
