Breathing Communication
& Breathing Spaces
Digital Illustration and Photography
These two works, although distinct in form and presentation, are united by a shared exploration
of communication, space, and the need for connection.
Breathing Communication, through five digital
illustrations, delves into the idea of communication as a complex and multifaceted process.
Using snorkel tubes—typically tools for one-way breathing—the series transforms them into a metaphor
for the depth and diversity in human interactions, encouraging viewers to reflect on how we share and
exchange ideas in nuanced, often unspoken ways. The harmonious gradient of blues in the background
further symbolizes the fluid and evolving nature of communication.
Breathing Spaces, in contrast, offers a more contemplative interpretation of space and connection.
Featuring a simple wooden chair beneath a hanging snorkel tube, it evokes the feeling of physical
confinement and the pressing need for personal space to breathe, both literally and metaphorically.
The chair speaks to the limitations of physical space, while the snorkel tube, positioned to allow
someone seated to breathe from it, suggests a crucial link to the outside world—highlighting the
balance between isolation and the necessity of communication and connection.
Together, these works explore the tension between limitation and freedom, the personal and the communal,
inviting viewers to reflect on the ways we navigate the spaces and interactions in our lives. Through
contrasting forms—a series of digital illustrations and a subtle, quiet installation—they draw attention
to the delicate balance between being in the world and seeking space to breathe, both physically and in our
social interactions.
